About Us

Our story, how we’ve grown, what we do and what we can offer fellow fans when they lose someone close that supported Sunderland. We have a number of videos throughout this site – please take some time to watch them.
Welcome to the SAFC Heaven Branch

We help navigate grief after losing a loved one where the central thing in their life was Sunderland Association Football Club.

About The Branch

We are a group of passionate football fans who share a common love for Sunderland football club. We believe that football can bring people together, foster friendship and promote healthy lifestyles in the toughest times. That is why we have created this community, where we can support each other with the loss of a loved one from the point of funeral arranging to the days and months afterwards.

One of the most challenging experiences in life is coping with the loss of a loved one. It can be overwhelming, lonely, and painful. That’s why we created a group that navigates  grief after losing a loved one where the central thing in their life was Sunderland Football Club.  We have a monthly peer group that meets regularly to offer comfort, compassion, and connection. We also provide resources, information and guidance when a family join their loved one to the branch. We maintain a memorial area by the Stadium Of Light where people go to reflect, lay ashes as well as memory pebbles.  No matter the age, gender or religion if someone has lost either a spouse, a parent, a child, a friend or anyone else the group brings people together.

If you are here because you have lost a loved one who loved the lads, we wish to send our deepest sympathies at this horrible time. We are the Sunderland Heaven Branch, and we exist to remember fans we lose but also support families and friends who are grieving them.

We are proud to say that thanks to funding from The National Lottery, we are supported in everything we do by a wonderful organisation called Impact Northeast Counselling Service.

About Our Name

We understand different faiths may not recognise Heaven. We discussed this with various fans and sought the advice of club chaplain Marc Lyden Smith and are happy that using the word Heaven would be accepted in the way it’s meant, offering comfort and being inclusive to all.

The branch welcomes all no matter their age, gender, ethnicity or faith. the one thing we all have in common is the love of our club.
