Our Memorial Garden
In October 2022 Sunderland Football Club agreed for us to be custodians of the area outside of the main stand where the fans statue is located.

Our Memorial Garden
Since 2022, a quiet corner near the Stadium of Light has grown into something truly special — a space where love, memory, and football come together.
What began as a simple gesture has become a cherished gathering place for Sunderland supporters remembering loved ones who’ve passed.
How does our Garden grow?
With the help of Brambledown Landscape Services, we transformed the area into a more suitable memorial space for Sunderland fans to visit to remember loved ones.
A Place of Quiet Remembrance: Caring for the Memorial Area at The Stadium of Light.
On match days, you’ll often see someone pause there — just for a few minutes — to feel close to someone they miss. Some bring painted pebbles, others leave flowers or ashes. Each tribute is deeply personal, yet together they form a tapestry of shared love and loss, woven through generations of fans.
At the Heaven Branch, we feel a deep responsibility to care for this space. It’s more than a patch of ground — it’s sacred to many. That’s why we regularly litter pick, weed, and gently tend to the area, ensuring it remains peaceful and welcoming for all who visit. Whether it’s a quiet Tuesday morning or a bustling match day, we make sure the memorial area reflects the respect and dignity it deserves.
In 2023, we placed a plaque there to honour fans who tragically lost their lives travelling to and from Sunderland games. It stands as a permanent reminder that their passion and presence are never forgotten.
We’ve also held our first two candlelight memorial services in this space — gentle, moving gatherings where families and friends came together to remember, reflect, and support one another. The flicker of candlelight, the hush of shared silence, and the soft murmur of football memories created something truly beautiful.
This area belongs to all of us — to every fan who’s ever sung in the stands, to every loved one we carry in our hearts, and to the community that continues to show up with kindness and care.
If you ever find yourself nearby, we invite you to visit. Whether you stay for a moment or linger a while, know that this space is kept with love — for you, for them, and for the spirit of Sunderland AFC.
Memory Pebbles
We hold memory pebble painting sessions approximately every 4 months.
These are for new members but also for a chance for people to freshen up pebbles that may have lost their colour.
These sessions allow us to paint together and remember our loved ones in a supportive environment then lay them at the memorial garden.
Each person who paints a pebble is given one of our special ‘love bug’ gifts to remember both the day and their loved one.

Remembering By Candlelight
Since The SAFC Heaven Branch formed in 2021, we have held 2 Candlelight Remembrance Services at our Memorial Garden, directly outside the main West Stand entrance to our beloved Stadium of Light.
We had support and words from Club Chaplin Fr Marc Lyden-Smith, Matchday commentator Nick Barnes and Chaplain Emma Satchell.
We round off our special evening with hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows to keep us warm with festive treats.
As numbers grew, our third, and latest Candlelight Remembrance Service took place in the wonderful, Sunderland Minster.
Members of our Facebook page chat and support each other online but until these events, many have never met – they are very special events. This has now became an annual event which we believe brings a lot of comfort to us all
